Description

A festive household in the French countryside buzzes with anticipation as the family prepares for the return of their teenage son for Christmas. The decorations are up, the pantry stocked, and even the cat wears a ribbon, but a sudden telegram brings news of scarlet fever at his school, turning celebration into urgent departure. Determined to be by his side, the parents board a wintery train bound for Paris, their journey quickly turned lively by an unexpected companion—a flamboyant, hat‑clad young woman named Placidia, whose impulsive spirit and quirky habits add both humor and tension to the crossing.

The story unfolds against the backdrop of a storm‑tossed Channel, where the carriage’s passengers grapple with cold, cramped conditions, and the looming threat of the boy’s illness. Through witty dialogue and vivid descriptions, the narrative captures the mix of anxiety and hope that fuels a desperate winter trek, while introducing a cast of eccentric travelers whose interactions promise both comic relief and subtle insight into the era’s social currents.
