CHAPTER X IN SEARCH OF A GRANDFATHER
On a bleak Alaskan morning, Mary Hughes wanders the bustling dock of Anchorage, her thoughts drifting between the cargo she’s meant to claim and the strangers that crowd the wharf. Amid crates of supplies she bumps into a diminutive, sharply dressed figure who introduces himself as Il‑ay‑ok, a mysterious man from the far‑north whose manner is both unsettling and oddly charming. Their brief exchange is interrupted by a loud, mocking newcomer who disparages the little man, hinting at deeper tensions between the newcomers and the native peoples of the region.
As Mary’s curiosity grows, so does the sense that something larger is afoot: Il‑ay‑ok speaks of his distant home, of ancient customs, and even of a violent encounter with the first white visitor to his village. The encounter sets the stage for a tale of cultural clash, daring escapades, and unexpected alliances, inviting listeners to follow Mary as she steps beyond the dock and into an adventure that stretches far beyond the frozen shoreline.
