A ROUGH DIAMOND.
Transcriber’s Note
In a breezy country house fronted by statues and blooming shrubs, a scattering of well‑dressed gentlemen and ladies gathers for a light‑hearted evening. Lord Plato, Sir William Evergreen, the flamboyant Cousin Joe and a host of other personalities fill the stage with witty repartee and a touch of genteel chaos. The playwright frames the scene as a snapshot of mid‑nineteenth‑century society, where vanity, ambition and affection collide in comic fashion.
The first act opens with Sir William greeting his old army friend Captain Augustus Blenheim, whose return from Ireland sparks a lively exchange about love, letters and missed chances. Blenheim confesses that his youthful sweetheart, once the object of his adoration, has married a titled suitor, a revelation delivered with a mix of rueful humor and seasoned irony. As the two men trade barbs about silence, creditors and the perils of romantic silence, the dialogue swings between gentle nostalgia and sharp satire, promising an entertaining glimpse into the folly of hearts and the sparkling folly of a polished crowd.
