Description

A towering figure in Budapest’s artistic circles, Dömötör János commands attention as much for his imposing stature as for his modest, self‑effacing demeanor. As the head of the prestigious master‑school, he balances a public reputation of official acclaim with a private aversion to the bureaucratic trappings of his rank. His days are spent carving marble and molding clay, the rhythm of his hammer and chisel echoing the fierce dedication of a gladiator confronting raw material.

Beyond the studio, Dömötör navigates a fragile domestic world with his wife Herta, a refined baroness whose genteel presence stands in stark contrast to his own rugged vigor. Apprentices and young artists orbit around him, drawn to his uncanny ability to translate flesh into stone while he quietly wrestles with doubts about his academic grounding. The first act paints a vivid portrait of a man whose art is both his sanctuary and his greatest burden, setting the stage for the tensions that will shape his creative life.
