Davy is a bright nine‑and‑a‑half year‑old who has already fallen in love with the world of scouting. Though too young for the official tender‑foot badge, he swears the Scout Oath alone in front of his mirror and pins a secret badge over his heart, dreaming of the day he can hike with his older cousin Fred. The story follows his eager preparations and the small rituals that make his everyday feel like an adventure.
With Christmas approaching, Davy decides to earn his own money by shoveling snow, hoping to buy a cherry tree for his mother and a bright tie for his father. He knocks on doors, faces polite rejections, and finally lands a modest job that tests his resolve, all while keeping his scout smile. When a frantic young lady drops her suitcase, Davy instinctively steps in, offering a steady hand that reflects the very good turn the Scout Law demands.

Best known for gentle early-20th-century stories for children, this author wrote warm, adventure-filled fiction that celebrates kindness, family, and everyday courage. Her surviving work is little documented, which gives it the feel of a small rediscovered corner of classic children's literature.
