Description

In the waning winter of 1648, the quiet market town of Farnham awakens to an uneasy excitement as soldiers escort the captive King Charles I through its streets. Villagers gather, whispering prayers and speculation, while servants bustle behind the regal entourage. Amid the hushed awe, a young boy—sharp‑eyed, earnest, and newly sworn into the soldier’s coat—observes the scene with a mixture of reverence and curiosity, his imagination ignited by the rare sight of a monarch in chains.

As the evening shadows lengthen, the boy’s world collides with the larger turmoil of a nation on the brink of upheaval. He finds himself drawn into secret conversations and uneasy alliances that hint at hidden loyalties and looming danger. Through his eyes, listeners will experience the tension of a kingdom teetering between defeat and the hope of restoration, all while the boy wrestles with his own place in a story that could reshape his future.

Dorothea Townshend

A versatile late-Victorian and early-20th-century writer, she moved easily between novels, poetry, children's books, and lively works of biography and history. Her books often bring earlier periods to life through storytelling as much as scholarship.
