Description

In a sweltering field hospital, where the buzz of flies mixes with the scratch of a colonel’s pen, a tiny, rag‑clad boy appears at the doorway. Orphaned and hungry, George Washington McKinley Jones declares himself a “crack shot” and insists he wants to become a hero, not a soldier. Colonel Austin, hardened by duty yet softened by compassion, sees the fierce resolve in the child’s eyes and offers him a chance to belong.

The story follows the boy’s struggle to prove his worth amid the grim realities of war, learning the harsh lessons of discipline and sacrifice while clinging to the hope his mother imagined for him. As the colonel mentors the hopeful youngster, their unlikely bond shines a light on courage that rises from the dustiest corners. Listeners will be drawn into a tale of resilience, friendship, and the quiet heroism found in the most unexpected places.
