Description

A weary traveler named Truedale steps off a rattling train at a secluded pine‑cove station, his health weak and his purpose unclear. The darkness outside the cabin presses in, but a solitary figure in the woods offers a steady hand and a sturdy mare, guiding him toward the flickering glow of Jim White’s remote cabin. The rugged landscape, with its towering pines and the crackle of a pine‑cone fire, frames an uneasy welcome in a place where few people dare to linger.

Inside the modest log home, Truedame finds a rugged host who tends a gun and speaks of the sparse settlements scattered across the hills—Greysons, Martin’s, and Lois Ann’s—each a distant whisper in an otherwise silent valley. Their conversation hints at a deeper tension beneath the quiet routine, suggesting that the isolation of the mountains may be more fragile than it appears. Listeners are drawn into a modest, atmospheric tale of companionship, survival, and the subtle mysteries that linger just beyond the firelight.
