Description

Set against the turbulent backdrop of England in 1137, the tale opens as King Stephen’s contested reign casts uncertainty over the realm. Amid the political shuffling of bishops and lords, the newly founded Reading Abbey rises on the banks of the Kennet, its stone walls and soaring roofs still half‑finished, yet already a beacon of hope and devotion. Skilled craftsmen from across England and the continent—masons from Normandy, Italian carvers, and a gifted limner from Pisa—converge to adorn the chapel with unprecedented artistry, rivaling the great cathedrals of the north and south.

The abbey’s founders secure extraordinary privileges: exemption from royal taxes, free mills, and unfettered rights over forests and fisheries, ensuring the monks’ self‑sufficiency and prosperity. Within these walls, the learned Father Michael Angelo Torpietro guides the community, blending sacred instruction with the flourishing of the humanities. As the stonework nears completion, the story hints at looming challenges that will test the abbey’s sanctity and the fragile peace of the kingdom.
