CHAPTER V
Born into the noble Bassompierre family of Lorraine, François receives a rigorous education at Pont‑à‑Mousson and Ingolstadt before setting out on a youthful tour of Italy with his brother. Returning to Paris, his charm wins him a place at Henri IV’s court, where he dazzles the king with a ballet performance and soon becomes a trusted escort for the king’s beloved mistress. The sudden death of Gabrielle d’Estrées thrusts the young courtier into the swirling intrigues of royal favourites, cementing his reputation as a gallant and quick‑witted presence at court.
His martial spirit soon draws him to the battlefield, and he rides beside Henri IV in the campaign against Savoy, surviving a narrow escape at Montmélian. Later, driven by ambition and a thirst for honor, he volunteers for the Imperial army in Hungary, confronting both enemy Turks and the personal enmity of General von Rossworm, a longstanding family rival. These early triumphs and the sharp wit that earned him royal favour set the stage for a career that will later plunge him into the perilous world of diplomacy and intrigue.
