The story opens on a sweltering December day in Rio de Janeiro, where the cobblestones of São Bento sizzle under an unforgiving sun. The street teems with the clang of carts, the scent of raw coffee, and a flood of laborers—white‑shirting brakemen and sweat‑soaked black workers—who sweat and shout as they pile burlap sacks into a waiting wagon. Women in simple white kerchiefs sweep the spilled beans, turning the chaos into a rhythm of survival, while ragged Italian boys dart between the crowds, pocketing whatever they can.

Inside Francisco Theodoro’s warehouse the pressure mounts. The foreman, a burly mulatto with a steel drill, forces the sacks open while the foreman’s clerk, Joaquim, barks orders to the exhausted loaders. With a deadline looming for the docks, every motion becomes a race against time, and the cramped, dust‑filled space crackles with both dread and determination, hinting at the personal ambitions and hidden tensions that will shape the lives of those who toiled there.
