This volume brings together the public addresses, official letters, and personal papers of a president whose life spanned the turbulent decades before, during, and after the Civil War. Born in rural Vermont to an immigrant minister, the future leader excelled academically, earning Phi Beta Kappa honors at Union College before turning to the law. Early on he championed anti‑slavery causes, joined the emerging Republican movement, and married Ellen Herndon, a Washington society figure.
During the conflict he served as a New York quartermaster and later as inspector‑general, gaining a reputation for detailed logistical expertise. After the war he built a successful legal practice, held the lucrative post of collector of the Port of New York, and became a key player in state Republican politics. By 1880 he was a prominent delegate at the Chicago convention, where his support for General Grant helped secure his nomination for vice president, positioning him at the center of a nation on the brink of change.
