Description

A sweeping road traces the rugged coast of northern Ireland, winding through deep, silent valleys where sea‑blasted cliffs meet verdant glens. The landscape itself feels alive, its dramatic headlands and hidden bays shaping a world both remote and inviting. Within this striking setting, a visiting clergyman arrives at Tor Bay, drawn into the lives of the local Catholic community that clings to ancient traditions amidst a predominantly Protestant countryside.

At the heart of the tale is Michael McAravey, a stoic septuagenarian whose iron‑gray hair and weather‑worn features mark a lifetime of hardship and quiet defiance. His fierce independence and lingering bitterness toward the surrounding faiths create a tense, yet subtly human, backdrop for the fortunes of young Elsie, whose future hangs in the balance. As the clergyman learns the rhythms of the glens, listeners are offered a vivid portrait of a people caught between past rebellions and the slow, hopeful pulse of everyday life.

Edward N. Hoare

b. 1842

Best known for late-Victorian fiction with a practical, moral cast, this little-known writer left behind stories shaped by emigration, character, and everyday choices. His surviving books suggest a steady storyteller interested in history and improvement as much as entertainment.
