V. THE SPY
At Holly Hill, a sprawling Virginia homestead, the arrival of winter usually means stockings hung, firelight flickering, and the promise of Santa’s visit. This Christmas of 1863, however, the plains are shadowed by the Civil War, and the Stafford children—Bob, Ran, Charlie, and the golden‑haired Evelyn—find their gifts reduced to hatchets, nails, and a broken knife. Their mother tries to shield them with makeshift presents while the absent Major Stafford writes from the front, leaving a mix of disappointment and a stubborn hope that he will return in time for the holiday.
The story follows the children's quiet courage as they grapple with the harsh realities of war and the lingering magic of childhood wonder. Through whispered prayers and imagined adventures, they cling to the idea that Santa—or perhaps a miracle—might still appear on the hill. When the war‑torn night finally gives way to dawn, a surprise visit promises to reshape their Christmas in ways they could not have imagined.
