Description

In the shadowy towers of the Vieuvicq castle, the austere preceptor Perraudin presides over a tiny classroom, his patience tested by the quick‑witted twelve‑year‑old Guy. When asked to translate a puzzling Latin line about a “membrane” and hair, the boy turns the scholarly exercise into a playful battle of wit, leaving the teacher flustered and the lesson spiralling into absurdity. Their banter, full of clever wordplay, sets the tone for a story that mixes academic rigour with mischievous charm.

The mood shifts when a gentle child’s voice calls out from beyond a heavy oak door, pleading for Guy to open it. Perraudin, clutching the key, has declared a strange penance—six repetitions of a modest sentence—before any release, leaving the boy caught between obedience and curiosity. As the mystery of the locked chamber and the child's urgent request unfolds, Guy must decide whether to follow the rules or chase the promise of adventure that lies just beyond the threshold.
