Created by Congress on August 25, 1916, the National Park Service is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior. It manages national parks along with many other protected places, including monuments, historic sites, recreation areas, and seashores.
Its mission centers on protecting these places while making them available for people to learn from and enjoy. Over time, the agency has become a major force in conservation, historic preservation, interpretation, and public education across the United States.
The National Park Service is not an individual author, so there is no single personal biography to tell. Instead, its work reflects the efforts of thousands of rangers, historians, scientists, interpreters, and other staff members who help preserve the stories, landscapes, and landmarks in its care.
