About the author
Part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the National Park Service was created on August 25, 1916, through the Organic Act. It manages national parks along with many other protected and historic sites across the United States, helping preserve landscapes, landmarks, and stories that matter to the country’s shared history.
Its mission is famously practical and enduring: to conserve scenery, wildlife, and historic objects while also making them available for public enjoyment. Over time, that work has grown far beyond park boundaries, including preservation support, interpretation, education, and partnerships with communities, tribes, nonprofits, and local governments.
The agency has also become one of the most recognizable stewards of public land in the United States, with park rangers at the center of its public identity. Today, the National Park Service continues to care for hundreds of sites, from vast natural wonders to places tied to American history and culture.
