Created by Congress in 1916, the National Park Service is an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Its work is guided by a simple but powerful mission: to conserve scenery, wildlife, and historic objects while also making them available for people to enjoy.
Today, the agency manages a wide range of places, from world-famous national parks to battlefields, seashores, historic sites, and monuments. Its staff includes rangers, historians, scientists, maintenance crews, educators, and many others whose work helps preserve these places for future generations.
The National Park Service is also closely tied to public memory in the United States. Beyond protecting landscapes, it helps tell the story of the country through interpretation, preservation, and access, inviting visitors to connect with nature, history, and culture in ways that are both personal and lasting.
