Description

Nestled on a shoal in Charleston Harbor, this historic stone bastion was born from the United States’ post‑War of 1812 effort to shore up its coastal defenses. Designed under the guidance of European‑trained engineers, the fort’s massive walls and concentrated armament once dominated the harbor’s entrance, embodying the nation’s ambition for durability and firepower. By the late 1850s it stood largely unfinished, a silent sentinel awaiting a conflict it was built to prevent.

When tensions over secession boiled over, Major Robert Anderson arrived in late 1860 to command the garrison, unaware that his post would become the flashpoint of a nation’s bloodiest war. On the morning of April 12, 1861, a mortar from Fort Johnson exploded over the fort, marking the first shot of the Civil War and thrusting the isolated outpost into the national spotlight. The narrative draws on contemporary reports and earlier scholarship, offering a vivid portrait of the fort’s early days and the dramatic opening of the conflict.
