Description

Rising dramatically from the Wyoming prairie, this striking monolith was the nation’s first monument, proclaimed by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. The 1,280‑foot tower of dark grey rock gleams in sunlight and shifts hue with each cloud, its vertical columns still puzzling geologists. Visitors learn it may be a cooled volcanic neck or a massive sill, both suggesting millions of years of erosion that exposed its towering face.

Around the base, prairie dogs bustle in elaborate towns, offering a living glimpse of the old West, while mule deer, chipmunks, and hawks add to the lively soundtrack of the landscape. The surrounding grasslands, pine groves, and wildflowers create a vibrant tapestry that changes each season. A short nature trail circles the monument, inviting hikers to study the unique flora and striking columnar cracks up close.

The on‑site museum presents legends, fossils, and simple diagrams that bring the tower’s past to life for any visitor. With clear maps and a 4½‑mile loop through prairie‑dog towns and the river gorge, the guide invites you to explore both the geology and the sweeping Wyoming scenery.
