Best known for the Judy Bolton mysteries, this longtime children's author created one of the earliest girl sleuths in American series fiction. Writing under the pen name Margaret Sutton, she gave generations of young readers a heroine who was curious, brave, and unmistakably human.

Born Rachel Beebe in Pennsylvania in 1903, she later wrote as Margaret Sutton and also worked as a teacher. She is most closely associated with the Judy Bolton series, a run of 38 mystery novels published from 1932 to 1967.
That series stands out because it was written by a single author throughout its long life, giving the books a more personal, consistent voice than many other juvenile mystery series of the time. Alongside Judy Bolton, she wrote other fiction as well, but these books remain the center of her reputation and the reason many readers still seek her out.
She died in 2001 at the age of 98. Her stories have had a lasting afterlife among mystery fans, librarians, and collectors, who continue to celebrate the mix of suspense, warmth, and independence that made her work memorable.
