Born Maria Antonietta Torriani in Novara on January 1, 1840, she became known to readers as Marchesa Colombi. She worked as a journalist and fiction writer, building a wide readership in Italy through novels, stories, and newspaper writing.
She is especially associated with fiction that paid close attention to ordinary social life, including the pressures placed on women in marriage, work, and family life. Modern readers often single out Un matrimonio in provincia as one of her best-known works, and she is frequently described as one of the early feminist voices in Italian literature.
Torriani died in Milan on March 24, 1920. Though her reputation faded for a time, her writing has continued to attract renewed interest for its lively style, social observation, and thoughtful portrayal of women’s choices and limits in 19th-century Italy.
