Born Maria Antonietta Torriani in 1840 in Novara, she wrote under the pen name Marchesa Colombi and became one of the notable voices of late nineteenth-century Italian literature and journalism.
She is especially remembered for fiction that paid close attention to the social limits placed on women, often mixing sharp observation with an approachable, lively style. Her work is frequently linked to early feminist currents in Italy because of the way it examined marriage, work, respectability, and domestic life.
She died in 1920. Today, she is often rediscovered through A Woman's Destiny and other works that show how clearly she understood the choices and constraints facing women in her time.
