John Breck is an Orthodox priest, theologian, and author known for writing about biblical interpretation, moral theology, and bioethics in an accessible way. He studied religious studies at Brown University, earned an M.Div. from Yale Divinity School, and later completed a doctorate in theology at Heidelberg.
He taught New Testament and ethics at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary from 1984 to 1996, and later served as professor of biblical exegesis and patristics at the St Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris. He has also been associated with the St Silouan Retreat Center in South Carolina.
His books include The Sacred Gift of Life and Stages on Life’s Way, works that reflect his long interest in how Christian faith speaks to difficult moral and personal questions. Readers often turn to his writing for its thoughtful blend of scholarship, pastoral insight, and practical compassion.
