Born in Lappfjärd on January 4, 1844, Johan Albert Bergman was a Finnish teacher and writer who also used the pen name J. A. B. He studied at the University of Helsinki and went on to work in education, a background that shaped the clear, accessible style of his writing.

Bergman wrote across several forms, including short stories, novellas, poetry, and historical fiction. His known works include Kertomuksia, Aumolan emäntä, Nurmeksen kapina, Nevalaiset, Sulikki, and Kalervo. Many of his stories draw on Finnish settings, everyday people, and moments from the country’s older history.

He died in Helsinki on October 3, 1924. While he is not widely known outside Finnish literary history, digital libraries such as Project Gutenberg have preserved a number of his works, making them available to new readers today.
