Description

In the spring of 1238, the rugged coast of southwestern Finland buzzes with a curious mix of fishermen, traders, and the lingering presence of ancient rites. Though Christianity has been officially introduced for decades, the interior still clings to its pagan roots, creating a tense backdrop where the papal edict forbidding trade with the locals is openly flouted. The sea’s breezes carry whispers of both hope for commerce with distant Gottland ships and the uneasy coexistence of two worlds that barely overlap.

Amid the gathering, two striking figures dominate the conversation: a weathered elder with a silver‑gray beard, respected for his wisdom, and a darker‑haired, restless sorcerer whose reputation as a healer and mystic precedes him. Their families become entwined when the elder proposes a marriage between his daughter and the sorcerer’s son, a pact that promises alliance yet hints at underlying rivalries. As personal ambitions and ancient customs collide, listeners are invited into a vivid portrait of a culture on the brink of transformation.
