Description

In the early 1700s, the remote farms of eastern Finland are still reeling from the recent wars that handed the region to Russian control. In the small village of Säämingi, the aging blacksmith Jaakko Nevalainen, a former soldier, watches with growing alarm as the royal tax collector Affleck’s harsh demands push the local peasants toward desperation. Through Jaakko’s eyes the novel paints a vivid picture of a community on the brink, where old loyalties clash with the lure of foreign assistance.

Around the blacksmith’s hearth gather his young relatives—Juhana, the restless nephew, and Anna, the orphaned niece—each embodying the hopes and anxieties of a new generation. Their conversations, flavored with folk superstitions and the lingering influence of foreign literature, reveal the simmering unrest that will soon erupt into open revolt. The story weaves together personal drama and the broader currents of Finnish national awakening, offering listeners a richly textured glimpse of a rare episode in the country’s past.
