Born in 1832 and dying in 1902, G. A. Henty was an English writer remembered above all for his hugely popular adventure fiction for young readers. His books were often set against major historical events, mixing brisk storytelling with battles, travel, and survival in far-flung settings.
Before and alongside his fiction, he worked as a journalist and war correspondent. That background helped give his stories their energetic pace and concrete detail, and it also made him one of the most recognizable names in late Victorian boys' fiction.
Henty was astonishingly prolific, producing novels, stories, and magazine work on a large scale. While modern readers may notice the strong imperial attitudes of his era in some of his writing, his influence on historical adventure fiction was lasting, and many of his books remained widely read long after his lifetime.
