Description

Fred Bingham has built a reputation as a powerhouse of Victorian engineering, overseeing sewers, railways, and grand estates across England. Yet beneath the façade of public success lies a domestic world steeped in tension: a timid wife who clings to hope, servants who feel the sting of his sharp tongue, and a mounting anxiety over the precarious finances that hold his empire together. The narrator paints a vivid picture of a man whose generosity with gifts cannot mask the bitterness that erupts at the slightest provocation.

One morning a terse note arrives from a private enquiry office, promising information of “last importance” for Bingham. The cryptic summons pulls him away from his hectic London routine and forces him to confront a mystery that could unravel the delicate balance of his business and family life. As he wrestles with doubt and curiosity, listeners are drawn into a tense portrait of ambition, fear, and the hidden forces that threaten to overturn a seemingly unstoppable career.
