About the author

Born in London in 1855, Arthur Wing Pinero first worked in the theatre as an actor before becoming one of the most successful playwrights of his time. He wrote lively early comedies and farces, then gained wider acclaim for more serious plays that explored social rules, reputation, and marriage.

His work was central to the development of modern English drama in the late 19th century. Among his most famous titles are The Magistrate (1885), The Second Mrs Tanqueray (1893), and Trelawny of the 'Wells' (1898), works that helped define the London stage of their era.

Pinero was later knighted for his contribution to theatre, and he died in 1934. Today he is remembered as a bridge between popular Victorian stage entertainment and the more psychologically and socially searching drama that followed.
