About the author

Born Adolf (Aatto) Suppanen on April 15, 1855, in Ruskeala, he was a Finnish writer, journalist, and translator who wrote under the pen name Aatto S. English and Finnish reference pages agree that he died in Helsinki on February 3, 1898.

Suppanen is especially remembered for his translation work. Reference sources describe him as one of Finland's first professional literary translators, and note that by the late 1800s he was translating extensively into Finnish, especially from Swedish and German. Finnish biographical sources also credit him with a large body of translations and with helping bring both nonfiction and literature to Finnish readers.

Alongside that work, he published original writing of his own, including fiction from the 1880s. Although he did not become one of the biggest literary names of his era, his role in building Finnish-language reading culture has given him a lasting place in literary history.
