About the author

Born in 1855 and dying in 1898, Aatto Suppanen worked as a translator, author, and editor during a period when written Finnish was still rapidly developing. According to the Finnish National Biography, he was among Finland’s first professional translators, and his most important work was his broad and high-quality translation of nonfiction into Finnish.

Alongside translation, he also wrote works of his own. His career falls mainly in the final decades of the 19th century, and later assessments have especially praised the language and style of his translations.

Even so, his work did not receive the attention it deserved while he was alive. Today, he stands out as an early builder of Finnish literary culture: a practical craftsman of language whose influence was larger than his fame.
