友情 - 武者小路実篤
A young playwright named Nojima drifts into the imperial theater on a friend’s urging, more out of habit than desire. In the polished hallway he first catches sight of Sugiko, a woman whose calm beauty he has only known from a long‑ago photograph. The brief encounter, set against the hum of rehearsals and the polite bows of seasoned actors, awakens a mix of admiration, envy and an unexpected spark of inspiration.
As the play unfolds, Nojima watches Sugiko from a distance, his thoughts drifting between the nuances of friendship, the pressures of artistic ambition, and the larger social questions of his era. He listens to his friends debate politics and philosophy, while his own mind circles around the possibility of a deeper connection, even as he struggles to find the right words.
The opening leaves Nojima haunted by the fleeting glance, his heart racing with both creative yearning and the longing to bridge the gap between admiration and conversation. This delicate balance of personal desire and broader idealism sets the tone for a story that explores how a single moment can reshape a writer’s world.
