Description

Set in the bustling world of Ming‑era Zhejiang, the story follows a young scholar named Qisheng, son of the upright official Zhu Tingfang. Though praised for his literary talent, Qisheng feels restless and seeks a quiet refuge away from the noise of his hometown. He joins two fellow literati, Zheng Wei and Ping Xiang, in renting a secluded hermitage where they can study and exchange verses.

At the monastery, a chance encounter with a dignified monk and a striking young woman sparks a subtle, unspoken attraction. Amid the clamor of a midnight Buddhist ceremony, Qisheng discovers a delicate golden hairpin—a symbol that hints at a deeper connection and sets his thoughts racing. Together with his companions, he navigates the delicate balance between scholarly ambition, friendship, and the fleeting stirrings of love, all against a backdrop of poetry, ritual, and the gentle rustle of ancient temples.

Little is known for certain about this writer beyond a pen name and an active period in the late 17th to early 18th century, which gives the work an extra air of mystery. Surviving attributions connect the name with Qing-dynasty Chinese fiction that blends storytelling with moral and social themes.
