Description

A hopeful young sailor leaves the familiar harbors of New England for a daring apprenticeship aboard a sturdy Salem‑built brig bound for the far‑off islands of the South Pacific. The crew of the Glide, many of them barely out of their teens, chase the promise of exotic trade, swapping iron tools and trinkets for the prized beche‑le‑mer sea snails that fuel the market in the Fiji archipelago. Their arrival brings encounters with tattooed chiefs, colourful ceremonies and a bustling exchange of goods that feels as vivid as it is precarious.

But the adventure soon turns hazardous when a sudden storm drives the ship onto hidden reefs, leaving the men marooned on a remote shoreline. Stripped of their vessel and supplies, they must navigate a landscape of dense jungle, unfamiliar customs and the looming threat of hostile tribes reputed for their cannibalistic practices. The early days of survival test their courage, resourcefulness, and the fragile bonds forged on deck, setting the stage for a gripping tale of endurance in an untamed world.
