Description

On a grimy doorstep in the cramped lane of Lavender Terrace, Sally Dent welcomes a new lodger whose reputation for courtesy outshines his shabby appearance. Though his clothes are threadbare and he arrives staggered from a night of drink, he carries a silk‑lined Bible and the practiced hand of a former scholar, impressing neighbors who hear of the elegant letter he once penned. The locals—carpenter, the sharp‑tongued Mrs. Minn, and other weary tenants—watch with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism as he promises to be a reliable tenant and, perhaps, something more.

The boy he looks after, a thin eight‑year‑old who spends his afternoons watching trains from a heap of discarded pots, becomes the lodger's quiet charge. Together they attend Sunday school, share modest meals, and the lodger begins to rebuild a sense of purpose, even as the neighbourhood edges toward a mill workers' strike that threatens their fragile stability. Through small acts of generosity and an unexpected promise, he sets in motion a series of events that will test whether his gentle name can truly be lived up to.
