CHAPTER X
In a cramped, damp room on a bustling London backstreet, teenage Bert watches over his frail sister Prin, whose bout of measles has turned into a dangerous bout of bronchitis. The siblings share a fierce loyalty, finding moments of tenderness amid squalor and the constant worry that the illness might claim her. Their neighbor, a stern Scottish woman named Mrs. Kay, surprisingly tends the tiny bed, offering a glimmer of care in an otherwise bleak setting.
When a gang of rowdy youths erupts in a noisy fight above their door, Bert leaps into the fray, determined to shield Prin’s sleep from any disturbance. The clash leaves him bruised, but a wandering doctor steps in, tending his wound and chastising his rash bravery, while hinting that more careful diplomacy may be needed. As the street’s chaos swirls around them, the siblings find themselves caught between survival, the harsh realities of poverty, and the faint promise of a better future.
