Description

The story follows a teenage George Washington as he trades the comforts of Virginia for the untamed wilderness of the Ohio Country. At sixteen he joins a grueling three‑hundred‑mile trek to the French forts on Lake Erie, where he first learns the hard lessons of diplomacy and survival. Along the way he befriends Robert the Hunter, a mixed‑heritage youth whose own discoveries and courage echo Washington’s growing sense of duty.

The narrative weaves Washington’s early military engagements—his defense of Fort Necessity, his service under Braddock, and the daring campaigns that lead to Fort Duquesne—into a vivid portrait of a leader in formation. Through encounters with French officers, Native allies, and seasoned frontiersmen, he displays the patience, honor, and practical skill that later define his command in the Revolution. By the time he returns home to marry, the reader sees how these frontier trials forged the character that would shape a nation.
