Description

A storm of flags and firelights sweeps across the rugged Borders in September 1547, as the English Protector Somerset leads an army of eighteen thousand toward the Scottish frontier. The night is lit by a chain of beacons—from St. Abb to Lanarkshire—sending a warning that the English have arrived, and the countryside erupts with the cry, “The enemy is come!” The tension between the two kingdoms, still reeling from the death of Henry VIII, sets the stage for a clash that will test loyalties and courage on both sides of the border.

At the heart of this turmoil stands Fast Castle, a crumbling fortress perched on the sea‑blasted cliffs, its romantic ruin a prize for any conqueror. Somerset’s forces seize the stronghold, install a garrison of English troops and foreign mercenaries, and demand tribute from the surrounding villages. Yet the local Scots, unwilling to bow to a foreign ruler, plot a daring and desperate effort to wrest the castle back, hinting at the fierce resistance that will shape the region’s turbulent history.
