Description

In the shadow of the towering Sangre de Cristo peaks, a small crew hauls shovels, picks and powdered explosives into a newly‑bored tunnel, dreaming of the riches that might lie within the rock. Their cabin, perched on a high ridge above the San Luis Valley, is a modest refuge of pine‑scented firelight and crisp mountain air, while a crystal spring bubbles at the cliff’s base. As the assay slips from old‑hand geologist Amos hint at ever‑rising values of lead, copper, silver and gold, optimism fuels long days of labor and the promise of a “million‑dollar drift” that could change their lives.

Winter arrives with deep snow drifts, sealing the valley and testing the men’s resolve as supplies run thin and the next assay remains overdue. When Buchan returns from a three‑day trek through the blizzard, his face is streaked with tears and anger, hinting at a betrayal that could shatter their hopeful venture. The story pauses at this charged moment, leaving listeners poised on the edge of a dangerous discovery and the fragile bonds that hold the miners together.
