Description

A lively social comedy unfolds when the well‑meaning but hapless Jim Wilson decides to marry Bella Knowles. The narrator, a long‑time friend of both, watches the whole affair turn into a series of absurd misunderstandings, from a mysterious yellow note and a Japanese butler to a misplaced pearl collar and a box of soap. Jim’s grand ambitions to be taken seriously clash with the town’s habit of treating his every move as a joke, and his rotund, expressive demeanor only fuels the farcical gossip.

Caught between loyalty to her friend and the chaos of Jim’s theatrical courtship, the narrator navigates witty banter, tangled letters, and a wedding that feels more like a prank than a ceremony. As old acquaintances gather and old grievances surface, the story captures the humor and pathos of trying to keep dignity intact when everyone else seems to be laughing at you.
