CHAPTER IX—“THE OLD VAN SEEZEUM ON ITS WAY”
A young American soldier named Jimmy McGee wanders the sun‑bleached roads of France, his uniform a mismatched patchwork and his mind filled with the mix of fear and curiosity that greets every new recruit. The opening captures a moment of comic bewilderment—a kiss from a French girl named Louise and a barrage of unfamiliar French slang that Jimmy tries to mimic with phonetic flair. Through his eyes we hear marching boots, the smell of mud, and the chatter of comrades trying to make sense of the chaotic front between Verdun and Saint‑Mihiel.
Kelly lets Jimmy speak in the raw language of the trenches, peppering the story with half‑French phrases that convey both camaraderie and confusion. The early chapters follow his reluctant adjustment to trench life, from “That Mule Was a Slacker” to the nervous anticipation of the first big battle, while humor keeps the tone light despite danger. Listeners will feel the clash of cultures and the stubborn optimism of a soldier who, despite mud and cold, keeps searching for a friendly face or a good laugh.
