The Gospel opens with the voice of a wilderness prophet preparing the way for a figure unlike any before. John the Baptizer, clothed in camel‑hair and feeding on locusts, baptises crowds in the Jordan, announcing a mightier one who will bring the Holy Spirit. When Jesus steps out of the water, a dove descends, a heavenly voice declares him beloved Son, and he is driven into the desert for forty days of testing before emerging to proclaim, “The Kingdom of God is near—repent and believe.”
From that moment he gathers fishermen, trades his net for a call to become “fishers of people,” and begins teaching in Capernaum with a striking authority that amazes the crowds. He drives out foul spirits, heals feverish mothers, lepers, and the sick, and retreats to solitary hills for prayer. Each miracle deepens his reputation, inviting listeners to walk with a teacher whose compassion meets power.
