A sharp‑dressed rider on a black stallion rides into the dusty streets of Dallas, his sombrero glittering with silver and his eyes scanning every face. Known for wiping out a notorious gang two years earlier, the young ranger has been ordered by the adjutant general to bring in Dell Spreen, a cold‑blooded murderer and robber who vanished after killing Eph Carson. His striking outfit—a goat‑skin jumper embroidered with scarlet roses and blue breeches fastened with silver buttons—draws curious glances from farmers, horsemen, and townsfolk alike.
Inside the sheriff’s office, the ranger finds a cramped corner where a mute boy in faded overalls sits, his pale blue eyes unblinking. A loiterer on the porch offers half‑hearted directions, but the ranger’s focus remains on the thin trail of clues left by Spreen. With his carbine at his side and a pack of cigarettes laid out like evidence, he begins to piece together the murder‑robbery that set the hunt in motion, aware that the chase may lead him deeper into the city’s hidden danger.

Best known for fast-moving Westerns, he also wrote mystery and sea stories, giving his work a wider range than the frontier label suggests. His nonfiction book Triggernometry helped keep the legends of Old West gunfighters in print for later readers.
