Description

A lyrical drama in three acts, this work draws on the ancient Finnish pantheon to paint a vivid portrait of a people on the brink of change. Its verses echo folk melodies, weaving together mythic figures such as the venerable Wäinämöinen, his daughter Emoina, and the fierce young leader Joukavainen. The language is deliberately musical, letting the rhythm of the lines suggest songs that have long floated through Finland’s forests and lakes.

The opening act places us on a dark September night along the cliffs of Kyro, where a crumbling hut and towering pines set a stark, atmospheric stage. As flames flicker and a harp sounds, Wäinämöinen and his companions summon the spirits of their homeland, chanting for freedom and recalling the strength of their ancestors. The chorus of Finnish voices rises in haunting harmonies, establishing a powerful sense of communal yearning that drives the drama forward.
