A Finnish-born writer who spent most of his life in Sweden, he is best remembered for an early literary take on the Finnish mythic hero Väinämöinen. His career also stretched beyond literature, with work in banking alongside his writing for the stage.

by Gustaf Anton Brakel
Born on December 17, 1782, in Pirkkala, Gustaf Anton Brakel was Finnish-born but lived most of his adult life in Sweden. Sources describe him as a bank commissioner as well as a playwright, showing a life divided between public service and literary work.
Brakel is especially associated with Wäinämöinen (1829), a lyrical dramatic work in three acts. That title stands out because it draws on the figure of Väinämöinen from Finnish tradition, making Brakel part of the early literary interest in Finnish myth and legend.
He died in Stockholm on January 10, 1853. While he is not widely known today, his surviving work gives a glimpse of a cross-cultural author working between Finnish roots and Swedish literary life.
