VUOKSEN VARRELLA
MARTTI WUORI
HENKILÖT:
A sunny, post‑Midsummer Saturday afternoon sets the stage on the banks of the Vuoksi, where the modest Suvantola homestead bustles with neighbors, shepherds and a wandering troupe of Romani travelers. The houseyard, with its low fence, porch swing and distant birch woods across the river, becomes a lively backdrop for everyday chatter, secret glances and the first strains of folk songs that the community knows by heart.
Among the characters are Justiina, the matriarch keeping an eye on her son Janne; Miili, an orphan girl who drifts between work and melody; and Niki with his flamboyant Romani companions Manja, MiiHKa and Nastasja. Their whispered plans and playful banter spill into spontaneous verses, inviting the audience to join in the singing and even the dance. The play’s musical texture weaves traditional Finnish tunes with Romani motifs, creating a vibrant tapestry that captures the rhythm of rural life while hinting at hidden tensions that will soon surface.
