Description

A sun‑lit riverbank in 1715 frames the opening, where sand‑built huts and granite‑cutting crews bustle beside the imperial summer palace. Amid the clatter of drums and the easy hum of workers’ songs, a young Finnish farmhand named Afrosinja climbs onto a bench to point out the Tsar marching across the field, her sharp wit slicing through the men’s bravado. The dialogue crackles with humor and dark hints, as the laborers argue over foreign ships, barbers’ fees and the strange power that seems to follow the monarch everywhere.

The play draws a sprawling cast of historical figures—from Peter the Great and his secretive second wife to princes, ministers, and even a Finnish serf—each caught in the swirling currents of ambition and unrest. Through the eyes of ordinary men and women, the audience watches the court’s glittering façade collide with the harsh reality of those who build and serve it. In this first act, the stage is set for a tragic saga of loyalty, betrayal and the heavy cost of a crown that demands more than any one soul can give.
