TOINEN OSA - I
At the start of the novel a young voice awakens with the fresh energy of spring, asking the timeless question: what is my purpose? The narrator’s thoughts drift between the bright world beyond the window—trees, lakes, soaring swallows—and the quiet interior of a cramped Helsinki apartment. This contrast sets the stage for a meditation on ambition, duty, and the many ways life can unfold for those just stepping into adulthood.
In the opening chapter we meet Terttu, a teenage girl caring for her ailing mother, Emmi Alanne, who lies connected to a hospital bed. Their home is a modest four‑room flat in the Sörnäinen district, its walls echoing with the rustle of newspapers and the faint hum of distant ships. As Terttu stares out at the autumn sky, she wrestles with the weight of family responsibilities and the yearning for something beyond the familiar streets, hinting at the choices that will shape her future.
