In this unsettling anthology each fragment hovers at the edge of reality, turning ordinary institutions into nightmarish mirrors. The narrator, on a solitary Tyrolean trek, becomes lost and stumbles into the nameless hamlet of Zinsblech, a place that does not appear on any map. Silent, shuttered houses and a cryptic sign pointing to house 666 lead him to a looming stone church against the darkening sky. The atmosphere feels both absurdly humorous and macabre.
Inside, the green‑painted doors stand ajar, revealing a cavernous nave of rough stone, ancient altars, and solemn statues that seem to watch the intruder. Drowsiness overcomes the wanderer, and he lies on a plush covering just as a phantom in a scarlet robe, clutching a crooked wooden cross, steps forward from the pews. The scene pulses with uncanny details—the faint chant of unseen voices, a lingering scent of incense, and moonlight slipping through a high, vaulted window. This episode sets the tone for the collection’s blend of grotesque imagery and sharp social satire.

Best known for the scandalous play Das Liebeskonzil, this German writer and former psychiatrist pushed satire so far that it led to a prison sentence. His life and work sit at the uneasy crossroads of literature, religion, politics, and mental illness.
