In the quiet town of Ostrau, perched near the Oder River, life revolves around the rhythm of ovens, honey‑laden gingerbread and the modest homes of its residents. The story follows a royal counselor, Wohlfart, whose devotion to his king is matched only by the affection he feels for his family, despite a marriage that has remained childless for years. When his wife finally gives birth to a son, the household is transformed, and the small garden they tend together becomes a symbol of hope amid the town’s humble routine.

The newborn, Anton, quickly reveals a mind that refuses to be tamed. He questions ordinary customs, prefers to explore the world with his own stubborn logic, and delights in the simple games he invents with his father’s pipe and a cracked sugar cube.
