Description

In the year 1003 a modest settlement springs up beside the Fulda’s spring‑fed waters, where the monastery of Herolfsfeld begins to take shape under the protection of heavenly patrons and the lingering fame of two companions of Saint Boniface. Within a few generations the cloister evolves into a fortified little city, its stone walls, timber‑topped roofs and soaring towers casting a silver gleam in the noon sun. The monks, now a community of one‑hundred‑and‑fifty brothers, manage vast lands, farms and villages that stretch from Hessen through Saxony, Bavarian and Thuringian realms, turning the sacred site into a bustling hub of agriculture and trade.

Beyond the fields and chapels, the monastery becomes a center of craft and charity. Blacksmiths pound weapons, artisans set precious stones into liturgical objects, and skilled masons shape new halls, while healers dispense herbal remedies and the brotherly guild offers shelter and sustenance to travelers and the needy alike. This vivid tableau of early medieval life invites listeners to step into a world where faith, industry, and communal spirit intertwine.
