In a hidden hollow on the eastern slope of Svábhegy, a deep fissure separates two once‑fertile vineyards now reclaimed by stone and brush. A narrow, barred gate guards a modest house whose lone window peers out onto a garden overrun with weeds, a solitary marble column bearing the Latin motto “Virtus semper diligenda.” The path to the property weaves through crumbling walls, suggesting a place cut off from the bustling city below.
The house belongs to a city doctor, a senior officer in charge of the contagious‑disease ward, who retreats here each evening after long, exhausting shifts. His young wife, left to her own devices, tends a sparse kitchen, waters a lone rose bush that grew from a dug‑out pit, and reads only the official Gazette the husband delivers. Neighbours—a reclusive tailor and a cloistered teacher—glimpse her only from a distance, reinforcing her isolation.

1825–1904
A towering figure in 19th-century Hungarian literature, he wrote sweeping, adventurous novels and plays that made him one of his country’s most beloved storytellers. His life was just as dramatic as his fiction, shaped by politics, journalism, and the revolutionary spirit of 1848.
