Description

A flamboyant octogenarian, draped in a flowered silk kaftan and glittering with turquoise, ruby and diamond rings, lords over a bustling Parlor in a remote Hungarian manor. His booming complaints about a mysterious yawn set the stage for a gathering of vivid personalities—a sharp‑eyed young woman absorbed in patience, a fragile sixteen‑year‑old gazing out a window, and a parade of quirky locals who each carry a hint of Dickensian charm. Their idle chatter quickly gives way to talk of a new, daring mode of duelling, promising a shift from lethargy to peril.

When word reaches them of the infamous robber chieftain, the fearsome Fatia Negra, the household is thrust into a world of rugged Wallachian and Transylvanian landscapes. Old grudges, hidden treasures, and a series of strange contests loom on the horizon, drawing the characters into a whirlwind of intrigue and humor. Listeners will be carried along a path where romance, wit, and sudden danger mingle, inviting them to wonder how these “poor plutocrats” will navigate the chaos before them.

Mór Jókai

1825–1904

A towering figure in 19th-century Hungarian literature, he wrote sweeping, adventurous novels and plays that made him one of his country’s most beloved storytellers. His life was just as dramatic as his fiction, shaped by politics, journalism, and the revolutionary spirit of 1848.
